Naish X4 12 (Year: 2004)
Review by: mikes - 2005-01-29 (11:22 pm)
My experience with this product: 6-10 sessions

X3 + Rhino II = X4

A very nice high AR, big boost kite, probably the last of the classic high AR kites now that 5th line systems are changing everything.

Smooth gust handling and healthy wind range like the X3, plus low end that the X3's lacked. Lofty floaty jumps like the Rhino II's and low end grunt except that is easier to handle. Feels a touch slower than my X2 12m, but more predictable and smoother power delivery, especially when a gust hits. Faster than R4's, probably since the X4's are more powerful than the R4's, 12m X4 = 14m R4, so you can ride a smaller kite.

When well powered up the jumps are high with lot's of hang (more than my X2 12m), but you can easily go for lower level airs for moves that are more predictable than the X2. When not powered enough for lofty airs you can still ride with a lot of speed and do pop/no whip moves. Goes upwind really well, even when not powered enough for big airs, just build up some speed then ease upwind.

All in all it's just a better X2, X3, and RII, and all rolled into one kite.

I ride a 130x38 similiar to a Jaime Pro, I've owned:
F-One and Flysurfer foils
2002 Ocean Rodeo 9m
2002 X2 12m
2003 X3 8m
2003 RII 16m
2004 X4 8m
2004 X4 12m

nefas44 Hi,
I'm from Italy. I got a question for mikes or anyone that wrote the X4 12m wind range. It says 08-16 knots... How can it be so low?? this windrange is suitable for kite of 18-20m2... I'm going to buy an x4 12m and I would like to know the true about the wind range. Thank you so much

mikes 8 knots can barely get most 20m kites going, I'd say 13 knots or so is the minimum, 15-20 knots is the sweet spot, 25 would be the maxed out

KiteHighTaco I'm not sure what kind of board this person to be able to plane in 9 knots with this kite...I'd say a more practical bottom end would be 14 knots with a medium board and 15 with a small board. I has having a hard time with my 128cm in lighter winds yesterday but I wanted to give it a try. With the kite way up high, I could get on plane by diving it down hard but the wind was so light the the kite wouldn't power through the turn back up and I lost my plane. I woulnd't normally move to this kite until 16 knots.
BUT...ONCE it gets powered, be prepared to get soar legs from edging so hard....and BOOST.... OMG!
